OBAMA IN NEW AFRICAN ROLE
BARACK OBAMA, the former President of the United States, has taken on a new role within the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) African business.
Having launched its African division in May 2021, the NBA values the business at almost $1 billion. As part of the move, Obama has become a strategic partner and minority owner of the NBA’s African branch and is set to use his stake to fund the Obama Foundation youth and leadership programmes across the continent.
In a statement, Obama commented: “The NBA has always been a great ambassador for the United States—using the game to create deeper connections around the world, and in Africa, basketball has the power to promote opportunity, wellness, equality, and empowerment across the continent.
“By investing in communities, promoting gender equality, and cultivating the love of the game of basketball, I believe that NBA Africa can make a difference for so many of Africa’s young people.”
