FROM INTEREST TO INDUSTRY

For Steven Sutherland, a lifelong curiosity in technology led him into this sector.

“I very much dabbled in technology, electronics and other related areas as part of my hobbies when I was at school,” he recalls. “It led me to study at a technical school, and this in turn paved my transition into the technical sphere.”

Sutherland began his professional career working in South Africa for what was then known as the Department of Post and Telecommunications. Following this, he worked for Plessy Telumat, Dimension Data and MiX Telematics where he went from telecommunications into telematics; two fields that complemented one another and helped develop his experience in the wider technology and communications sector.

From here, and for around the past five years, Sutherland has proudly worked for Adapt IT Holdings, firstly in the capacity of General Manager, and then having risen to the executive position he holds today.

“What keeps a person in this particular space is the fact that it is never the same,” Sutherland explains. “It is constantly changing and it’s probably one of the few sectors where the technology has to evolve continuously simply to keep up with the demands coming from end-users.

“It has been an exciting space ever since I started and continues to be into the present - it keeps you on your toes all the time.”
