Res­i­dents dis­placed by floods project to be paid

The fam­i­lies that sur­ren­dered their land for im­ple­men­ta­tion of Sh10 bil­lion Lower Nzoia Ir­ri­ga­tion and flood mit­i­ga­tion project in Bu­dalangi Con­stituency can now breathe easy after the gov­ern­ment agreed to start com­pen­sat­ing them.

Project man­ager Ed­win Many­onge, from the Na­tional Ir­ri­ga­tion Board, yes­ter­day said the Min­istry of Wa­ter and San­i­ta­tion has al­ready re­ceived Sh450 mil­lion from the Na­tional Trea­sury that will later be trans­ferred to the Na­tional Land Com­mis­sion (NLC) ac­counts to fast­tract re­im­burse­ment.

The com­pen­sa­tion will be done in three phases.

“The to­tal dis­place­ment bud­get is Sh1.5 bil­lion but so far we have re­ceived Sh450 mil­lion that is with the Na­tional Land Com­mis­sion that is man­dated to carry out com­pen­sa­tion which will be done in three phases,” said Mr Many­onge.

He was speak­ing after pay­ing a cour­tesy call to Bu­sia Gov­er­nor Sospeter Ojaa­mong in Bu­sia town.

Mr Many­onge­said the con­trac­tor is al­ready on the ground and the project has started with River Suo di­ver­sion, con­struc­tion of dykes and works on the in­take struc­ture.

The project which cov­ers both Bu­sia and Si­aya Coun­ties has two com­po­nents for flood mit­i­ga­tion sys­tem and in­volves con­struc­tion and re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion of dykes at cost of Sh1.4 bil­lion.
