Residents displaced by floods project to be paid
The families that surrendered their land for implementation of Sh10 billion Lower Nzoia Irrigation and flood mitigation project in Budalangi Constituency can now breathe easy after the government agreed to start compensating them.
Project manager Edwin Manyonge, from the National Irrigation Board, yesterday said the Ministry of Water and Sanitation has already received Sh450 million from the National Treasury that will later be transferred to the National Land Commission (NLC) accounts to fasttract reimbursement.
The compensation will be done in three phases.
“The total displacement budget is Sh1.5 billion but so far we have received Sh450 million that is with the National Land Commission that is mandated to carry out compensation which will be done in three phases,” said Mr Manyonge.
He was speaking after paying a courtesy call to Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong in Busia town.
Mr Manyongesaid the contractor is already on the ground and the project has started with River Suo diversion, construction of dykes and works on the intake structure.
The project which covers both Busia and Siaya Counties has two components for flood mitigation system and involves construction and rehabilitation of dykes at cost of Sh1.4 billion.
