Petty of­fend­ers to get non-cus­to­dial terms

At least 100 petty of­fend­ers are to be re­leased from the King’ong’o GK Prison this week as the Ju­di­ciary em­barks on an ini­tia­tive to de­con­gest pris­ons coun­try­wide. Upon re­lease, some of them will be com­mit­ted to com­mu­nity ser­vice and oth­ers put un­der pro­ba­tion, Com­mu­nity Ser­vice Or­ders Na­tional Chair­man Jus­tice Luka Ki­maru said. He said that only petty of­fend­ers serv­ing up to three years or have a sim­i­lar pe­riod re­main­ing in jail qual­ify for non-cus­to­dial sen­tences.
