Health­care union­ists plead for more se­cu­rity for col­leagues

The lead­ers of health­care pro­fes­sion­als’ unions have asked the gov­ern­ment to pro­vide se­cu­rity for their mem­bers work­ing at Tharaka Sub-county Hos­pi­tal, who have been re­ceiv­ing threats fol­low­ing the death of a snakebite vic­tim.

Ad­dress­ing the press in Chuka town, the union­ists, led by the KNUN Chair­man Fabian Marigu and KMPDU branch sec­re­tary John Tatua, said the lives of their mem­bers were in dan­ger. Mr Marigu said two health of­fi­cers had al­ready recorded state­ments at Ma­ri­manti Po­lice Sta­tion and sought ad­di­tional se­cu­rity.

Mr Marigu said the health­care of­fi­cers have been ac­cused of lax­ity in han­dling a 12-year-old girl, Faith Mak­ena, who was rushed to the fa­cil­ity but died al­most 24 hours later while re­ceiv­ing treat­ment.
