China is now Africa’s largest trade part­ner, even as it con­tin­ues to bag mega in­fra­struc­ture projects on the con­ti­nent, ac­cord­ing to the lat­est data from the China-africa Re­search Ini­tia­tive at Johns Hop­kins Univer­sity. In Septem­ber 2018, when in­ter­na­tional rat­ing agency Moody’s listed Kenya among coun­tries at the high­est risk of los­ing strate­gic as­sets to China over debt, Chi­nese debt to the coun­try stood at Sh554.88 bil­lion, or 73.4 per cent of Kenya’s bi­lat­eral debt.
