Most min­eral pro­duc­tion in Rwanda is car­ried out by ar­ti­sanal min­ers who are grouped into co-op­er­a­tives . The co-op­er­a­tives em­ploy thou­sands of res­i­dents liv­ing around min­ing com­mu­ni­ties. A study by the Al­liance for Responsible Min­ing es­ti­mated that ar­ti­sanal and smallscale min­ers con­trib­uted ap­prox­i­mately$39.5 mil­lion to Rwanda’s econ­omy in 2015. Min­ers’ in­come was mostly spent on ed­u­ca­tion, health­care and ac­qui­si­tion of as­sets.
