Aukot joins chorus for IEBC chiefs to be sent home after bungling election
Thirdway Party leader Ekuru Aukot (pictured) yesterday joined NASA in demanding the immediate resignation of top electoral agency managers.
Speaking yesterday in Nairobi, Aukot who ran for the top seat in the August 8 General Election said the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati, CEO Ezra Chiloba, head of ICT James Muhatia, Immaculate Kasait( director of elections) and Praxidice Tororei (director of legal affairs) must go.
“The judgment established that the IEBC mismanaged this election including the tampering of forms 34Bs, 34As. To that extent Chiloba, being the CEO of the Commission must take full responsibility and vacate office immediately. Consequently all the 290 Returning officers should resign immediately,” Aukot said.
“While we care for the institutional memory of the institution, which Chiloba epitomises currently, we will not accept the commission of offences, illegality and irregularities under his watch. That is why we call on Chiloba to take full responsibility,” he added.
It will be difficult for them to face the fresh election which is to be conducted within 60 days with the current composition of the electoral agency.
Aukot noted that he does not support the overhaul of IEBC but bad elements in the institution should be uprooted.
“Electoral offences and omissions by IEBC staff must be punished to restore confidence in the electoral management body. It is clear that IEBC cannot be trusted as a neutral body,” he said.
