Par­ents’ call for safety mea­sures to end school fires

The Na­tional Par­ents’ As­so­ci­a­tion wants the gov­ern­ment to im­ple­ment ef­fec­tive safety mea­sures to stop in­creas­ing fire in­ci­dents in schools.

As­so­ci­a­tion chair­man Nicholas Maiyo yes­ter­day said the gov­ern­ment has been com­ing up with new mea­sures af­ter in­ci­dents of fire are re­ported in schools, but noth­ing is im­ple­mented.

He said the as­so­ci­a­tion is sad­dened by the death of eight stu­dents on Satur­day in a dor­mi­tory fire at Moi Girls’ High School, Nairobi.

“We send our con­do­lences to the fam­i­lies that lost their chil­dren and wish quick re­cov­ery to those stu­dents in hospi­tal,” Maiyo said.

The par­ents want swift in­ves­ti­ga­tions con­ducted into the fire in­ci­dent at Moi Girls’. Maiyo said Ed­u­ca­tion CS Fred Ma­tiang’i should call an ur­gent stake­hold­ers’ meet­ing to re­view safety mea­sures in schools coun­try­wide.
