Hyundai Motor Ioniq wins 5-star Euro NCAP rating

Hyundai Motor’s Ioniq has received the top five-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP), a Belgium-based European car safety performanc­e assessment program.

Hyundai Motor said in a press release, Thursday, thatthe three Ioniq models got the maximum five-star safety ratings in the four categories — adult occupant safety, child occupant safety, pedestrian category and safety Assists. The ratings were the highest in the small-size car segment.

“The all-new Ioniq models are equipped with cutting-edge technologi­es for the driver’s convenienc­e. It is not only the safest but also the most appealing car in the segment,” said Hyundai Motor Europe Senior Vice President and COO Thomas A. Schmid.

Hyundai Motor said that Euro NCAP recognized the Ioniq’s various safety features such as autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist and adaptive smart cruise control.

Hyundai Motor has introduced two different electric powertrain­s for the model — the Ioniq Hybrid and the Electric — and is expected to introduce its plug-in version soon, aiming to expand the world’s fifth-largest automakers’ market presence in eco-friendly vehicles.

Hyundai Motor said it will have a total of 28 environmen­tally friendly models in its lineup to become the world’s second-largest eco-friendly automaker by 2020.
