LG shows efficient frequency tech

LG Electronics said Sunday it has demonstrated a new telecom technology last week, full duplex radio (FDR), which is capable of doubling the frequency efficiency of existing networks, for the first time ever.

The electronics maker said it has worked with a research team at Yonsei University, led by electronic engineering professor Min Byung-wook, to jointly develop FDR technology.

The company said FDR is based on a broadband multi antenna technology called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), run on the 80 megahertz (MHz) frequen- cy range.

It also stressed that FDR can boost frequency efficiency in the fifth-generation (5G) network environment, compared to the existing time division duplex (TDD) technology.

“By predominating in FDR technology, which is expected to be a major standard in 5G technologies, we will continue to strengthen our competitiveness and presence for 5G technology standards,” said Kwak Kook-yeon, head of LG Electronics’ next-generation standards research center.

FDR technology conducts multiple data transmissions in a single frequency range at the same time without time differences. By contrast, TDD technology is designed to send and receive with a time lag.

LG Electronics said FDR technology is expected to be particularly effective in frequency ranges under 6 gigahertz, in which the available bandwidth of frequencies is limited.

Considering the highly appreciated value of limited frequency resources, FDR technology’s frequency efficiency boosting feature may create economic value of many trillions of won, according to the company.

LG Electronics has pushed to develop FDR technology since 2014. It succeeded in demonstrating FDR technology over the 20MHz current long-term evolution frequency in October of last year.
