‘Haenyeo’ inscribed on UNESCO cultural heritage list
‘해녀'유네스코문화유산으로등재
Haenyeo ― female divers on the southern island of Jeju ― were listed as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Wednesday.제주도의 해녀가 수요일 유네스크 인류무형문화유산에등재됐다.
This came weeks after the UNESCO Evaluation Body, which evaluates the nominations list, recommended in early November that the haenyeo culture be inscribed on the list.
이번등재는 11월 초등재목록을평가하는 유네스코 심사위원회가 해녀를 등재 목록으로추천한지몇주만에나온것이다.
Haenyeo were once breadwinners who risked their lives to dive deep into the sea without breathing apparatus.
해녀는한때호흡장치없이바닷속깊은곳까지 목숨을 걸고 잠수해 들어가는 가장역할을하기도했었다.
They hold their breath for minutes at a time to collect conches, abalones and seaweed to make ends meet.
해녀들은생계를유지를목적으로소라고둥, 전복, 해조류등을채취하기위해한번에수분씩호흡을참는다.
According to the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA), haenyeo represent the cultural identity of the scenic island where people in the past relied heavily on the sea to survive. 문화재청에따르면해녀는제주도의문화 적 정체성을 나타내는데, 옛날 사람들은 이곳에서 생존하기 위해 주로 바다에 의지했었다.
The women divers’ eco-friendly way of doing business and their passing down of diving know-how for generations help them to be listed as a UNESCO cultural heritage, it said.
해녀들의 친환경 사업 방식과 다이빙 노하우의 전승이 이번 유네스코 등재에 도움이되었다고문화재청은밝혔다.
In a press release, the CHA expressed hope that Korea’s iconic culture can gain fresh attention from the world on the occasion of its being inscribed on the UNESCO list. 보도 자료에 따르면 문화재청은 해녀가유네스코에등재됨에따라한국을상징하는 문화가 세계에서 새로운 관심을 받을수있다는기대감을드러냈다.
