Korean expert to lead UK finance journal
Kim Woo-chang, an industrial and system engineering professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), became the first Korean managing editor of the British finance engineering journal Quantitative Finance, the institute said Thursday.
According to KAIST, Kim has actively led academic research about financial optimization, and portfolio and asset liability management. In particular, Kim’s recent achievement in research on robo-advisers in the financial technology sector has been credited for his appointment, the institute said. “Editorial staff of Quantitative Finance consists of the greatest scholars in finance engineering, including four winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics,” the institute said. “Kim’s appointment as the managing editor of the academic journal is a first for a Korean.”
Robo-adviser refers to an automated service that manages personal assets through algorithms based on a client’s investment pattern information.
Founded in 2001, Quantitative Finance is considered one of the most highly regarded academic journals in finance engineering a l ongside Mathematical Finance.
Besides his new role as the chief editor of Quantitative Finance, Kim is also working as a high-ranking editor at multiple international academic journals such as Journal of Portfolio Management and Optimization and Engineering.
Kim is also serving as a member of the voting right committee of the National Pension Fund and an advisory professor at Samsung Asset Management. Since October last year, he has been the head of KAIST’s Financial Engineering Lab.
