Samsung, LG receive display awards
Samsung Display and LG Display won awards for their organic light-emitting diode (OLED) products from an international display society, the companies said Thursday.
The Society for International Display (SID) presented Samsung Display’s quad-edge flexible OLED with the Display Industry Award (DIA) and LG Display’s 65-inch ultra-high-definition wallpaper OLED television panel with the Display of the Year award.
The quad-edge flexible OLED has been used for Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones. It was the world’s first mobile display to have all four edges in curved form, providing the smartphone with a better grip when held, according to the SID.
“Samsung Display has released products based on cutting-edge flexible OLED technologies. It is an honor to take the leadership in the display market with the quad-edge flexible OLED,” said Jeon Seok-jin, head of Samsung Display’s marketing team.
Established in 1962, the SID is the world’s largest industrial society dedicated to display products and technologies. More than 6,000 companies worldwide are members of the society. The SID holds the Display Week event every year to share ideas on the latest display technologies. The society will host the SID 2017 event at the Los Angeles Convention Center May 21 to 26.
LG Display said the 65-inch wallpaper OLED television panel is thinner than 1 millimeter. Even when the panel is assembled as a complete television set, it is only 3.55 millimeters thick and weighs 7.4 kilograms. The company said the society commented on the panel that it provides not just superior picture quality but also high applicability in terms of design.
“LG Display will continue to concentrate on developing next-generation technologies as the world’s lead- ing company in the display sector,” said Yoon Soo-young, vice president and head of LG Display Laboratory.
LG Display said its 65-inch wallpaper OLED television panel received an innovation award in January at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017.
The company will also release 28 technical papers on display technologies including 4K OLED television, standardization of high dynamic range (HDR), virtual and augmented reality and transparent displays during this year’s SID event.
Samsung Display and LG Display are the world’s largest display makers.
