KT, SKT to showcase latest techs at MWC America 2017
KT and SK Telecom will compete to expand their business presence worldwide at the first Mobile World Congress America (MWCA) in San Francisco this week, according to the companies, Sunday.
KT will be the only Korean telecom company to open an exhibition at the MWCA 2017. The company said it will showcase its core technologies for the fifth-generation (5G) network, artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analysis.
“KT has actively participated in international telecom fairs to promote innovative 5G technologies before the global market,” a KT official said. “We plan to showcase our leading 5G technologies as we have them ready for the world’s first launch of 5G network services in the coming years.”
Hosted by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), the MWCA is the U.S. version of world’s largest telecom fair MWC, which is in Barcelona every year.
For the Asian market, the MWC is also held annually in Shanghai. This year’s MWCA will run from Sept. 12 to 14.
KT is showing what it calls the “GiGA Wire.” This technology enables up to 1 gigabit-per-second internet transmission speed even on old copper wire networks.
As it does not require expensive optical fiber cables, it has drawn attention from foreign countries that need to improve internet network infrastructure.
“We have successfully tested the GiGA Wire technology in Turkey and Spain, and made a deal to provide it in Boston before June,” a KT official said.
KT will also showcase its smart energy management platform, called “KT-Micro Energy Grid (KT-MEG).” Based on AI technologies, the platform is capable of analyzing variable energy consumption patterns in a building, estimating expected power use and providing ways to save energy, according to the company.
KT’s project to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, which taps into passengers’ mobile roaming data to track their travel histories to infected areas, will be on display.
