Fashion giants ban ultra-thin models

PARIS (AFP) ― A host of Frenchowned fashion labels spanning Christian Dior to Saint Laurent pledged Wednesday to ban ultra-thin models from their advertising and catwalk shows following repeated scandals about anorexia and mistreatment.

파리 (AFP) ―크리스티앙 디오르와 생로랑을 포함한 프랑스 패션 업계는 모델들의 반복되는 거식증과 학대 스캔들로 인해빼빼 마른 모델은 광고와 패션쇼에 기용하지않겠다고밝혔다.

French holding companies LVMH and Kering, which own dozens of top brands between them, unveiled a charter “to ensure the well-being of models” which will also outlaw the hiring of girls under the age of 16 to wear adult clothes at shoots or events.

다수의 명품 브랜드를 보유하고 있는 모에 헤네시 루이뷔통( LVMH)과 케링 그룹은 모델들의 건강을 보장하는 것을 골자로한 헌장을 발표했다. 헌장 내용에는 16세미만의 여성 모델에게는 촬영 현장과 행사에 성인용 옷차림을 금지하는 조항 역시 포함되었다.

In May, a French l aw requiring models to present a doctor’s certificate attesting to their health and was introduced to try to tackle the problem of the industry promoting thinness and unattainable beauty ideals.

한편,지난5월프랑스에서는마름을강조하고우상시하는 패션업계의문제를해결하기위해 모델들이 자신의 건강 상태가 명시된 의사의 진단서를 제출해야 하는 법안이통과된바 있다.

Ahead of the start of New York Fashion Week, the two French groups said they would ban their designers using size 32 models under the French system ― size XXS or size zero in the U.S. or four in Britain ― and only use women who are size 34 or over. Men would need to be size 44 or over.

뉴욕패션위크개최에 앞서, 두그룹은프랑스 기준 32사이즈 이하(미국 기준 XXS,또는 0, 영국기준 4)의모델은 사용하지않겠다고 말했다. 여자의 경우는 34사이즈 이상, 남자의경우는 44사이즈 이상모델만사용하겠다고말했다.

“Respecting the dignity of all women has always been both a personal commitment for me and a priority for Kering as a group,” the company’s billionaire chairman Francois-Henri Pinault said in a statement. “We hope to inspire the entire industry to follow suit, thus making a real difference in the working conditions of fashion models industry-wide,” he added.

억만장자로 알려진 프랑소와 앙리 피노케링그룹 회장은“모든 여성들의 존엄성을 유지하는 것은 제 개인적 사명임과 동시에케링 그룹의 우선 사항”이라며“패션 업계전체가 이러한 움직임에 동조해서 패션 모델 업계의 근무 환경에 실질적인 변화를 불러왔으면좋겠다”라고덧붙였다.

As well as the age and size stipulations, the charter includes other health and safety measures such as banning the serving of alcohol to models under 18 and ensuring they have a guardian or chaperone present at all times.

이헌장은 나이와 사이즈규제 외에도다른 건강과 안전 대책 관련 내용도 포함하고있다. 19세 이하의 모델에게는 주류 제공을금지하고 보호자나 매니저가 항상 동행할수있게보장하는것이이에해당한다.
