Seoul introduces 20 best places to visit this fall

- By You Soo-sun ssyou@ktimes.com

Seoul city government has unveiled a map, “Good-Looking Seoul,” featuring 20 of the most attractive venues to have opened in the city this year.

Eight of these locations have historical or cultural themes, eight have scientific or economic significance, and four are related to urban architecture. Each of these locations will offer various events, festivals and facilities throughout the year.

Some had previously denied access to the public. A 100-meter-long pedestrian path stretching along the Deoksu Palace wall in downtown Seoul has been built for the public after the British Embassy gave the land back to the city. Recently opened in Mapo-gu is the Oil Tank Cultural Park — a cultural complex big enough to fit 22 football stadiums — consisting of six distinct spaces that take their forms from what were once used as oil tanks in the 1970s. Yeouido Hidden Underground Bunker, the mysterious bunker found under a bus transfer station, is speculated to have been constructed in the 1970s for security purposes but will soon open as an art gallery.

The city government will continue to promote these places by encouraging citizens to participate in a photo contest, share photos on their social media accounts and vote online in choosing the most popular location. Two million won ($1,769) and a Canon DSLR camera will be given to the winner of the photo contest, which will continue until Sept. 25.
