Dyson intensifies rivalry with Samsung, LG
Dyson showcased an upgraded cordless vacuum cleaner, called “V8 Carbon Fiber,” in Seoul, for the first time in the world, Tuesday.
As both LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics have been aggressively pushing the cordless vacuum cleaner businesses, the British company’s new product is expected to intensify market competition here.
“We know that Korean consumers are very tech-savvy and thus have high expectations on high-tech devices,” said Kevin Grant, head engineer at Dyson, during a press conference in Seoul. “As an engineer, I believe Korean consumers will understand complex technologies of our products as well as their benefits.”
Dyson said the new vacuum has 155 air watts (AW) of suction power, up 30 percent from the previous models based on the same V8 digital motor.
Still, its fully charged battery runs up to 40 minutes, which is the same as the previous models, according to the company.
The term air watt is used as a measurement of a vacuum cleaner’s effectiveness.
Dyson also said the new vacuum cleaner has a post-motor filtration system it calls the “2-tier radial cyclone,” and is capable of filtering up to 99.97 percent of fine dust without discharging it back into the air.
It is not the first time for the V8 motor and the post-motor filtration system to be used for a Dyson vacuum cleaner.
The head engineer stressed its technology to retune each component for optimization has realized 30 percent power improvement even though the new model doesn’t have a major mechanical upgrade from the previous models.
The British electronics company launched its first cordless vacuum cleaner in 2011, based on the V2 digital motor. With 60AW of suction power, its battery ran up to 15 minutes.
LG Electronics is increasingly expanding its presence in the stick-type cordless vacuum cleaner sector with its Cord Zero A9. Introduced in July, more than 40,000 A9s have been sold in Korea in two months since its release.
