US punk band to burn through Seoul, Busan

Burn Burn Burn (BBB), a pop-punk band from Seattle, hasn’t been to Korea before, but they’re already friends with half the punk scene here. They’ll play four shows here this weekend in Seoul and Busan with local punk band ...Whatever That Means (WTM).

Last year, before ever meeting, the two bands collaborated on a split album titled “Blowing Minds & Melting Faces” on WTM’s label World Domination, Inc. (WDI). They finally met when WTM went to the western U.S. on tour and the two bands played together.

“It’s super fun doing that kind of stuff purely through email and then being able to put a name to a face when you meet a few months later to play shows together,” said Adam France, BBB’s lead guitarist.

The team-up led to further intercontinental collaborations, with Korean band Full Garage following a similar tour route earlier this year through the U.S. as WTM and releasing a split 7” vinyl record with U.S. band Crab Legs on WDI as well as BBB’s new label Tiny Dragon Music. Then this summer, Korean ska-punk band Skasucks took a similar pipeline, traveling through the same region for their “Make America Skank Again” tour.

According to Smith, their relationship with Korean punk dates back to 2010 when WTM while on a U.S. tour played a house party where Smith lived.

“My roommate wouldn’t let BBB play with ‘em because we were a new band and, in his opinion, had been getting too much attention,” Smith said. “In the end, Jeff thought I was super handsome and funny and six years later asked if we could do the split 7” together. And now we’re going on tour in Korea. Suck on that, ex-roommate!”

France, who joined the band after its 2010 start, met WTM later. “They came to visit me at my job one day before I’d actually met any of them and it was a pretty awkward encounter. They’re all super fun people, and Jeff and Trash (of WTM) are married so they have a really cool punk couple thing going on, very similar to Drew and me.”

Their first show is an acoustic concert on the WDI Rooftop in Sinchon on Thursday with Jeff of WTM and Jina of Billy Carter. On Friday they will play at Club FF near Hongik University in western Seoul with WTM, Billy Carter, 57, Blame Look, Hu and Adios Audio. On Saturday BBB and WTM will play in Busan’s HQ Bar with Busan punk band Sidecar.

Sunday, they’re back in Seoul for a show at Channel1969 in Yeonnam-dong, along with WTM, Skasucks and Octopoulpe.
