‘League of Legends’ champ launches campaign with K-pop girl group
SK Telecom’s professional gaming team T1 will hold an online game match with K-pop girl group Gugudan, Wednesday.
The team announced Monday they will play the online game “League of Legends” (LOL) at Seoul OGN e-Stadium in order to raise public awareness of child safety. The promotional event is organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and CJ E&M’s gaming TV channel OGN.
“LOL” is a five-on-five online game and one of the most popular competitive events in the world. T1 is arguably the world’s strongest “LOL” team. Backed by Korea’s largest mobile carrier SK Telecom, it has won League of Legends World Championship titles in 2013, 2015 and 2016.
Though the members have been busy preparing for the upcoming world championship tournament, they decided to take part in the campaign to contribute to society.
Lee Sang-hyeok, better known by his video game ID “Faker,” said he wanted to underline the significance of child safety with the event.
“We have spent our time preparing for the League of Legends World Championship, but this event will serve as an opportunity for us to put attention on social issues. We will play hard so we can let more people know the importance of child safety,” Lee said.
The promotional event will take place at Seoul OGN e-Stadium in western Seoul, 5 p.m. After the match, the winning team will donate 1,000 sets of lost child prevention products to disadvantaged children.
