Dr. Lee: Let me talk about Dampness today. What connotations can you come up with when you think about Dampness?

Peter: Well, let me think. It feels kind of sticky, enervating, not circulating, rotten... I don’t know. That’s all I can come up with.

Dr. Lee: Very good. You’ve actually gotten very close to the underlying meaning of Dampness.

Peter: Really? Tell me what it is like.

Dr. Lee: Dampness is not a good thing. Have you ever walked around in a very humid environment like a rainforest? Ever walked through heavy fog? The water droplets collect on and soak through your clothing. Your shirt clings to you. Even if it’s not horribly hot according to a thermometer it seems hot. It saps your energy. Dampness in the body is the result of a failure in fluid distribution. It’s swampy, sticky, and humid. Dampness is that sense of humidity that makes everything feel sticky and gross. In the body it creates a sensation of heaviness and fogginess and it makes other pathogens less likely to leave gracefully.

Peter: It’s not good at all! What kind of symptoms does it have?

Dr. Lee: First, stickiness. This applies on all kinds of levels. The skin feel sticky, saliva is sticky, mucus is sticky, the tongue looks sticky, the excretions are sticky, everything is sticky. Second, turbidity of excretions such as urine, stools, eye discharges or vaginal discharges. Third, heaviness. It causes sensations of heaviness in the body, a heavy head with or without a tight feeling or heavy limbs. Fourth, a foggy mind, unclear thinking, confusion and drowsiness. Last, spleen and stomach Qi problems are indications of dampness too: diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea and vomiting, low or no appetite. In Korean medicine, Pyeong-Wi-San is an excellent herbal medicine that dries off Dampness in your body.
