PAPERCLIPS, a new game from designer Frank Lantz, starts simply. The top left of the screen gets a bit of text, probably in Times New Roman, and a couple of clickable buttons: Make a paperclip.디자이너프랭크란츠의게임페이퍼클립(Paperclips)의시작화면은 단순합니다. 화면의 왼쪽 위에, 아마 타임스뉴로만 폰트로보이는‘클립 만들기( Make Paperclip)’와몇개의조절버튼이있을뿐입니다.

In between, Lantz, the director of the New York University Games Center, manages to incept the player with a new appreciation for the narrative potential of addictive clicker games,
exponential growth curves, and artifi-
cial intelligence run amok.
뉴욕대학의게임센터소장인란츠는스토리를 가진 중독적인 클릭커 게임에 기하급수적 성장이라는 개념과 인공지능에 의한종말이라는주제를담았습니다.
“I started it as an exercise in teaching myself Javascript. And then it just took over my brain,” Lantz says. “I thought, in a game like this, where the whole point is that you’re in pursuit of maximizing a particular arbitrary quantity, it would be so funny if you were an AI and making paperclips. That game would design i t self, I thought.” “처음에는자바스크립트를연습하려고시작했지요. 하지만곧여기에나는완전히빠져들었습니다.”란츠의 말입니다.“나는 임의의 숫자를 최대화하는 이런 단순한 게임에서주인공이 인공지능이고목표가클립을만드는것이라면 재미있겠다는생각이들었습니다.그렇게게임이나왔습니다.”
Lantz figured it would take him a weekend to build.란츠는처음이생각을 떠올리고 주말이틀을이용해이게임을만들려고했습니다.
It took him nine months. And then it went viral.

The idea of a paperclip-making AI didn’t originate with Lantz. Most people ascribe it to Nick Bostrom, a philosopher at Oxford University and the author of the book Superintelligence.
클립을 만드는 인공지능이라는 생각을처음 떠올린 것은 란츠가 아닙니다. 옥스포드의 철학자 닉 보스트롬은 자신의 책“슈퍼인텔리전스( Superintelligence)”에서 이아이디어를 소개했습니다.
