What can we see around Myeongjeongjeon?

-

Myeongjeong Gate is the main gate of Myeongjeongjeon, but it represents an older style than Myeongjeongjeon.

Unlike the other palaces, the main throne hall, Myeongjeongjeon, and its gate, Myeongjeong Gate, are not parallel.

It was not possible to make Myeongjeongjeon and Myeongjeong Gate parallel due to the lay of the land of Changgyeong Palace.

However, they used Eodo, the king’s road, which is straight, to straighten this twisted topography.

Gwangjeong Gate l i es to the south, while Yeongcheong Gate lies to the north.

“Gwangjeong” means “to brighten politics,” while “Yeongcheong” means “to be clear forever.” ‘

As these two gates were close to their offices, various officials often used them.

Eodo, Pumgyeseok and Bakseok are visible. Eodo is the king’s road. Pumgyeseok is known as the rank stone.

Officials lined up according to their ranks beside the rank stones.

Bakseok are flat stones which cover the ground and ensure people walk carefully, as well as protecting people from the sun’s reflection.

They also prevent the road from becoming slippery when it rains. The stairs are separated in three ways.

Some guardian animal statues are on the stairs, protecting the building from evil spirits that might come from the outside.

The center of the stairs is called Dapdo, which has Bonghwang, the legendary bird, carved into it.

The king’s sedan chair passed through it to reach the main throne hall.
