Qatar to provide Jordan 10,000 jobs

The Korea Times - - WORLD BUSINESS -

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Jordan’s royal court says Qatar’s foreign minister has promised to invest $500 million in infrastructure projects in the kingdom and provide 10,000 jobs for Jordanians in his country.

Wednesday’s pledge was the latest show of financial support for Jordan, after days of mass protests over planned austerity measures brought down the kingdom’s prime minister last week. Earlier this week, three other Gulf states promised a total of $2.5 billion to Jordan over five years.

Jordan is a key Western and Gulf ally, but has suffered an economic downturn and growing unemployment linked to regional crises. International lenders have called for economic reforms to bring down Jordan’s rising public debt.

Qatar’s pledge came after talks between Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Jordan’s King Abdullah II.
