Dyson has unveiled new air purifiers and a cordless vacuum cleaner, throwing a fresh challenge to its Korean rivals LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics, the British home appliance maker said Thursday.

The launch comes amid heated competition among home appliance makers in the domestic air purifier and cordless vacuum cleaner markets, which are showing sharp growth due to consumers’ rising interest in the quality of the air they breathe.

According to Dyson, the new cordless vacuum cleaner, the V11 220 Air Watts CF+, has the strongest suction among its vacuum cleaners. Its 220 watts are more than triple the company’s first cordless stick vacuum cleaner in 2010 that had 60 watts.

“Using our Cyclone technology that captures more microscopic dust, the latest vacuum cleaner has the strongest suction power compared to our previous vacuum cleaners,” the company said, adding its battery pack can operate for up to an hour.

Dyson also rolled out new air purifiers that can filter out many more dangerous particles. Both its Pure Cool Cryptomic air purifier and Pure hot+cool Cryptomic Purifying fan heater can absorb formaldehyde, a chemical that can cause lung disease, the company said.

“According to our own survey of 1,000 Koreans, 70 percent of them know what formaldehyde is and the chemical is linked to sick building syndrome,” the company said.

Dyson said many recipients answered that the removal of formaldehyde inside their home or building was essential to improving indoor air quality. The Pure Cool Cryptomic air purifier is priced at 998,000 won ($835) while the Pure hot+cool Cryptomic Purifying fan heater will be sold for 1.09 million won. The V11 cordless vacuum cleaner costs 1.19 million won.
