‘Creating symmetrical lip fixes dumpy, unfriendly look’
Over the past few years, lip injections have become the go-to nonsurgical procedure for celebrities, influencers and individuals looking to plump their pout and look sexy.
Yune Young-min, a dermatologist at Rose Clinic, agrees that the public interest has shifted from the upper to lower face.
“Lip injections and fillers are becoming increasingly popular in Korea thanks to growing desire for a pleasant resting look,” Yune said.
“Compared with the past, when Asians were stingy with their smiles, they are more willing to smile and express themselves. Also, people tend to like those who are perceived as happy.”
Yune said he injects botox into a patient’s marionette lines, which extend from the lip’s corners to the jawline, and underneath the lips to re-angle their structure.
“The key to getting a great smile is to have symmetrical lip structure,” he said.
According to him, upper lip asymmetry gives an unpleasant, sneering look whereas lower lip asymmetry delivers a dumpy, unfriendly feeling.
“The most common causes for having asymmetrical lip structure are facial paralysis, plastic surgery and wearing braces for a few years,” Yune said.
Once the botox is injected beneath the skin, it tightens the skin around the lips, softens smile lines and wrinkles around the mouth to help activate natural collagen buildup in the lip areas, he explained.
The effect of lip botox can last anywhere from three to six months. He added that some of his patients have small amounts inserted every three to four months to improve lip lines.
Apart from creating lip symmetry, Yune also mentioned that lip fillers are a natural-looking cosmetic enhancement.
“Lip fillers have become safer and reversible. You can also remove them anytime,” Yune said.
Yune also specializes in neck botox, as his ultimate goal is to not only make patients look more youthful, but give them a sense of confidence.
He said patients now opt for combination treatments that involve botox, fillers as well as lasers and micro-needling to resurface the neck skin and remove wrinkles.
When asked if neck botox is painful given that skin on the neck is thinner, Yune noted “necklines are sensitive, so it’s definitely a little painful, but because botox and fillers come in smaller particles, you shouldn’t worry too much over adverse effects.”
Rose Clinic is a leading dermatology clinic for botox treatment and filler injection in Korea. Yune has participated in various lectures and presentations held in China, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia to discuss common procedures performed in dermatology.
