Hyundai Mobis unveils ‘clusterless’ HUD
Hyundai Mobis is maintaining pole position in the lucrative vehicle infotainment market by developing a new vehicle information system that combines a digital cluster with a head-up display (HUD), the auto parts-making affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group said Thursday.
The company said its “clusterless HUD” will become mainstream in future vehicles such as electric vehicles (EVs), showing diverse information about vehicle operation on a simplified and integrated screen.
“For the first time in the automotive industry, we have developed a clusterless HUD that combines a digital cluster with a head-up display,” the company said.
EVs do not have engines or transmissions, so they can offer far more interior space compared to combustion-engine vehicles. Hyundai Mobis said it decided to develop the product to meet future market demand.
“While space utilization inside vehicles has become important in the EV era, Hyundai Mobis has preemptively introduced new concept display technologies optimized for autonomous driving and vehicle electrification,” the company said.
The company added that its clusterless HUD is designed to minimize distractions for drivers.
The display consists of four areas. The upper area displays speed, engine RPMs and information related to directions and advanced driver assistance systems, while the bottom shows shifting mode, cooling-water temperature, mileage, turn signals and warning signs.
Compared to current products, the screen size is also expanded to 15 inches. Also, the frame of the display is sloped toward the driver to increase visibility.
Mobis also expects the new display to help reduce the vehicle’s weight and increase maximum driving distance.
Hyundai Mobis has completed patent registration for the clusterless HUD in major countries including Korea, the United States, China and Germany, as it is seeking to win global orders through active promotions for domestic and foreign car brands.
“The combination of clusters and HUDs is expected to play a major role in safe operation by not only securing space but also securing drivers’ forward vision by bringing driving information together on a single screen,” said Han Young-hoon, head of the company’s information display sector.
Hyundai Mobis has been leading four essential parts of the vehicle information business: HUD, full-digital cluster, surround view monitor and AVNT (audio, video, navigation and telematics). By accelerating the development of an integrated infotainment platform, the company also aims to grow into an information and communications technology company for future cars.
