LG Uplus CEO extending support for patriots
LG Uplus CEO Hwang Hyeon-sik is leading a variety of efforts for the company to contribute to society, the latest of which seeks to promote the physical well-being of patriots and veterans.
LG Uplus and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs have partnered to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease in elderly people who have served their country. LG’s telecom affiliate will be providing 1,200 ‘smart pad’ tablet devices to those aged 65 and older, which they can use to maintain their cognitive abilities and will possibly enable early detection of the disease. The arrangements were made marking the month of June, which commemorates patriots and veterans on Memorial Day (June 6) and the anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War (June 25).
LG Uplus’s Hwang and Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Hwang Ki-chul were present at a ceremony marking the donation of the tablets, June 21.
The devices will be delivered to individuals at high-risk of developing cognitive disabilities, LG Uplus said. Those receiving the smart pads will have assistants visit them on a regular basis every week in a 20-class course to teach them to engage in app-based activities aimed at strengthening their cognitive abilities. The programs are designed to enhance capabilities in memory and concentration as well as maintaining numeracy skills. “It is an honor for LG Uplus to be able to provide support for those who have devoted their lives for our country,” Hwang was cited as saying. “We will see to it that quality services are offered to them.”
The veteran ministry’s Hwang said “LG Uplus’s support shows that Korean society has not forgotten patriots and veterans who devoted their lives for the country in difficult times. We thank the company for its support to enable various digital-based services to be offered at a time when concerns are growing over health amid the COVID-19 pandemic and as our society ages.”
LG Uplus has continued to offer support in preventing Alzheimer’s. Last year, the company provided tablets with applications designed to prevent the disease to a nursing home for patriots and veterans.
