3 suggestions for relaxing Saipan getaways this summer

- By Jun Ji-hye jjh@koreatimes.co.kr

With Saipan being cited as one of the candidates that could potentially sign a “travel bubble” agreement with Korea, domestic air carriers are moving to resume their international flights there.

Asiana Airlines will resume operating flights between Incheon and Saipan on July 24, 16 months after they were suspended due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, while T’way Air is ready to operate flights there from July 29.

Travel bubbles refers to a partnership between two or more cities or countries that have managed to curtail COVID-19 infections to allow quarantine-free air travel in both directions.

Saipan, one of the three inhabited islands in the Marianas that consists of 14 islands, has a population density of about 378 people per square kilometer, which is 43 times lower than the population density of Seoul, which means one person could hypothetically enjoy a space alone up to 43 times larger than in Seoul.

Marianas Visitors Authority has three suggestions for travelers who wish to experience a tranquil break from the ordinary this summer in Saipan.

Currently, the government of Saipan exempts people from mandatory isolation following their arrival if they have been fully vaccinated with the Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson &Johnson’s Janssen or AstraZeneca vaccine.

Relaxing at Managaha Island

Managaha Island, the paradise that can be reached in 10 minutes by boat from Garapan, the city center of Saipan, is a small and delightful resting place. The circumference of the entire island can be walked around in under 15 minutes.

You can dive directly into the water to appreciate the color of Saipan’s sea, or sit on the sandy beach and just take it in with your eyes.

Enjoying a book while basking

in the sounds of the sea and the radiant warmth of the sun’s rays is another way to fully appreciate the beauty of Managaha Island.

Take a romantic sunset cruise

The sunset in Saipan colors the horizon of the Pacific Ocean surrounding the island every night.

Visitors can enjoy the majesty of watching the sunset while floating on the sea.

Dinner is provided on most sunset cruises, and some tours include live music performances onboard, so it can be the best way to make the sunset of the day more special.

Stargaze the night sky

The Marianas is located near the equator, so travelers can feel closer to the stars than any other latitude on the planet.

Weeks when there is no full moon are the best for gazing at the stars.

From several spots including Banzai Cliff in Saipan, you can enjoy the most dazzling night sky of the Marianas.

Travelers can easily access transportation services to the stargazing spots and take beautiful photos on starlit tours.
