Korea prosecution, Saudi Arabia foster judicial cooperation
Korea’s Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok recently engaged in a high-level meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Korea Sami M. Alsadhan at the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office in Seoul, Jan. 23, marking a crucial step in fostering judicial exchanges between the two nations.
According to an official announcement from the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, the meeting was centered on expressing gratitude for the support extended by the Saudi Embassy during Prosecutor General Lee’s visit to the national anti-corruption authority (Nazaha) in Saudi Arabia last month. Key outcomes of the visit, including the formal signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Nazaha, were shared during the discussions.
The prosecutor general emphasized the importance of enhancing judicial cooperation, particularly in areas such as the extradition of criminals and the transfer of prisoners. The discussions delved into the criminal justice cooperation measures that were initiated during Lee’s visit to Saudi Arabia the previous month.
Alsadhan expressed understanding and expressed his commitment to actively cooperating to ensure the smooth progress of criminal justice initiatives and facilitating personnel exchanges between the two countries.
This meeting follows the prosecutor general’s inaugural overseas visit to Nazaha in December 2022. During that visit, he signed the Agreement on Mutual Understanding Regarding the Prevention and Combating of Corruption.
Nazaha, established in 2011 and operating directly under the king of Saudi Arabia, plays a pivotal role in combating corruption through overseeing investigations, prosecution and the recovery of criminal proceeds related to public corruption and financial crimes.
The diplomatic efforts underscore the commitment of both nations to collaboration in combating corruption and enhancing the effectiveness of their respective legal systems through mutual cooperation and understanding.
