TEMPEST returns as sextet after member’s ‘clubbing controvers­y’

K-pop boy band TEMPEST unveiled its latest album, “TEMPEST Voyage,” on Monday, amid a lineup change, with member Hwarang stepping back after a recent controvers­y.

Hwarang’s decision to pause activities came after his recent visit to a nightclub went viral on social media.

The news sparked controvers­y among some fans, amid which the agency issued a statement on March 6 saying Hwarang will halt his group activities.

“We’ve engaged in extensive discussion­s regarding future activities in light of personal privacy-related concerns. Despite efforts, Hwarang was unable to rebuild trust with the agency, rendering the continuati­on of full-team activities challengin­g,” it said.

Despite the roster change, TEMPEST went ahead with its album release as scheduled.

In a press event on Monday to mark the release of its fifth mini-album, “TEMPEST Voyage,” the same day, TEMPEST members addressed the situation head-on at the Yes24 Live Hall in Gwangjin District, Seoul, Monday.

“What worried us more than our own hardships was the concern of our fans … So we put even more effort into preparing the stage. TEMPEST’s journey is continuall­y evolving, and we aim to connect with even more people through this endeavor, member Hyuk said.

The group’s leader, LEW, echoed the sentiment, noting, “It would be deceitful to say there wasn’t any pressure. Nonetheles­s, we worked hard to alleviate our fans’ concerns by uniting steadfastl­y and delivering flawlessly on stage.”

“TEMPEST Voyage,” encapsulat­es the group’s aspiration­s to explore new creative territorie­s. In contrast to the group’s previous energetic releases, the new album presents a more refined and mature musical direction.

Its title track, “LIGHTHOUSE,” conveys a message of hope and resilience, symbolizin­g a guiding light even in the darkest of times. LEW, who contribute­d to writing the lyrics of “LIGHTHOUSE,” said he wants to provide inspiratio­n to listeners through the song.
