Hyundai E&C named preferred bidder for Gumi biogas project
Hyundai Engineering & Construction was selected recently as the preferred bidder for a 176.7 billion won ($132 million) project to build and operate a biogasification facility in the greater Gumi area in North Gyeongsang Province, the construction unit of Hyundai Motor Group said Monday.
The facility will be built in Chilgok County in the province after remodeling the Gumi Sewage Treatment Plant’s facility that processes food waste, sewage sludge and excreta. It will supply gas to the greater Gumi area after converting biowaste into 475 tons of biogas daily.
The project is intended to remove offensive smells through an underground relocation of the existing facility. It is also aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the facility’s management.
Once Hyundai E&C signs the main deal for the project, it will run the facility for 20 years after 48 months of construction. Its annual gas production capacity will reach 5.5 million normal cubic meters, which can be used by 9,000 households every year.
Since the construction firm built a pilot facility in Incheon in 2008 to develop biogasification technologies, the company obtained green certificates and 18 patents related to the technologies.
In 2016, it built the Chungju Food Bio Energy Center in North Chungcheong Province as the Ministry of Environment tasked the company with the construction and management of the facility which can process 80 tons of food scrap a day with technologies optimized for domestic food waste. Biogas extracted during the process is used to produce high-purity hydrogen, which is supplied as fuel for fuel cell electric vehicles at a neighboring hydrogen charging station.
