Jewish celebration of Purim to support relief efforts
As the festive air of spring is beginning, the Jewish community in Seoul gears up for their annual celebration of Purim. This year, the spotlight falls on a unique collaboration between two organizations: Hakehillah Korea and Crash Landed, bringing together tradition and modernity in a colorful amalgamation.
Purim, a springtime holiday, commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people from the hands of the wicked Haman, as recounted in the Book of Esther. Celebrated with joyous parties, the reading of the Megillah (Book of Esther), and indulging in sweet treats like hamantaschen, Purim is a time of merriment and remembrance. Additionally, dressing in costumes is a common tradition, symbolizing the disguises worn by Esther as she concealed her identity on her journey to becoming queen and ultimately saving her people.
Hakehillah Korea, a progressive Jewish community, takes the lead in organizing the Purim festivities. With a commitment to inclusivity, Hakehillah welcomes Jews from all walks of life, embracing diversity and providing a home for those seeking connection with their Jewish identity. Their Purim celebration, known as the Purim Spiel, promises a retelling of the ancient story through song, dance and interactive storytelling.
Adding a modern twist to the traditional narrative, Crash Landed, a group renowned for their vibrant drag performances, joins hands with Hakehillah to bring Purim to life in a whole new way. Since their collaboration began in 2021, Crash Landed has been an integral part of the annual Purim festivities, infusing the celebration with creativity and flair.
Attendees can anticipate an exhilarating experience as an emcee guides them through the timeless tale of Purim, with each pivotal moment marked by a dazzling drag performance. Portraying different characters from the story, the performers of Crash Landed promise to captivate audiences with their artistry and expression.
In a demonstration of solidarity and compassion, all proceeds from ticket sales will be directed towards World Central Kitchen’s relief efforts in Gaza. This humanitarian organization tirelessly provides food aid to thousands of Palestinians each day, offering sustenance and support to those in need.
Reflecting on the significance of Hakehillah, a member of the organization named Lee told The Korea Times, “Hakehillah Korea is a wonderful organization which has provided a safe space for me to express myself as a queer Jewish practitioner.”
Lee expressed gratitude for finding a community where they feel accepted and supported in their identity as a queer Jew. For them finding the group was a transformative experience. “Hakehillah provided a safe space where I could be both queer and Jewish without fear of judgment,” Lee shared. “It’s a community that embraces diversity and celebrates individuality.”
Saffron Reign, a drag performer and co founder of Crash Landed, emphasizes the importance of using art for a cause, stating, “Participating in a fundraiser drag show for Palestinians in Gaza was a no brainer for me.”
The event is more than just entertainment — it’s a platform for advocacy and solidarity. “As a drag artist, I believe in using my art for social change,” explained Reign, an Iranian American drag king. “Partnering with Hakehillah allows us to amplify important causes and highlight the intersectionality of our community.”
The show runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at KYLDN in central Seoul’s Itaewon. Tickets are available at bit. ly/dragpurim24 for 10,000 won each.
