Allure of literature
I spent most of my adult life in Canada, working as a banker. As I had a 9 to 5 job and casual afterwork social gatherings were not customary in Canada, I had plenty of time at home, and my favorite pastime was reading. However, the amount of time I was able to set aside for reading on a weekday was less than I desired. Now that I am retired, I can bury myself in books.
As I live in an English-speaking country, I have no choice but to read in English. I read books originally written in English as well as English versions of books written in languages other than English. While I read extensively, delving into diverse disciplines, I have read a lot more works of literature than anything else. Literature has been a constant companion in my life.
What is literature? Literature commonly refers to creative writings in prose or verse that express ideas of permanent or universal interest and have superior and lasting artistic or intellectual merit. Although it encompasses both fiction and non-fiction, fiction is the dominating literary form.
Literature reflects the society, the culture and the historical period in which it is produced. Indeed, literature has been pivotal in the chronicles of human expression, serving as a repository of collective narratives, values and imaginations.
It deals with common themes such as love, good versus evil, redemption, courage and perseverance, coming of age and revenge. Exploring these themes through literature can contribute to personal introspection and growth.
Characters — fictional or real — are presented in literature with complex emotions and situations. By witnessing their challenges, struggles, triumphs or defeats, we can develop a better understanding of the human condition and human nature.
Literature detaches us from time and place and transports us to some imaginary world, allowing us to escape the problems and responsibilities of our everyday lives and to participate, however briefly, in experiences that differ radically from our own.
Literature challenges the mind and encourages intellectual exploration. The process of analyzing themes, deciphering symbols and understanding complex narratives can be intellectually rewarding and fulfilling.
What’s more, literature enables us to cultivate empathy, which extends beyond the pages of a book and enhances our interactions with real people.
As a lover of literature, I am particularly captivated by the artistry of language. Writers wield words like painters use brushes, creating vivid imagery and evoking powerful emotions. Well-crafted prose, vivid descriptions and poetic language are aesthetically pleasing.
Embracing the world of literature is an odyssey through the boundless realms of human experience and imagination. Furthermore, literature is a wellspring of inspiration and a constant reminder of the beauty and complexity of the world. Through literature, I have discovered my voice, honed empathy and expanded understanding of the fundamental dispositions and traits of humans.
