Over 100 Hana Financial Group employees and their family members attended a group-organized volunteer campaign to help create portable braille teaching aids for the visually impaired, according to the group, Sunday. Braille is a six-dot code system that can be read by touch.

The event held at the group’s headquarters in Seoul was part of Hana’s efforts to bolster its environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) drive for sustainable growth.

Hana launched the campaign to help establish a system whereby the blind can enhance their long-term learning abilities in stages.

According to a recent study from the National Institute of Korean Language, two in five blind people were reported to have difficulty understanding braille.

The materials made by the attendees will be delivered to a welfare center for the visually challenged in Seoul. About 500 people including

the blind engage in rehabilitation education at the center.

The center expressed gratitude for the efforts to provide practical assistance to advance the education of the needy.

“We ask for continued support for the visually impaired and activities to enhance their welfare in the future,” an official at the center said.

The portable braille teaching aid making activity was an opportunity for Hana employees and their families to give back to the community and grow together with the less fortunate, according to Hana.

“We will continue to expand our social responsibility programs to elevate our financial services to encompass the happiness of the underprivileged,”

said an official overseeing the group’s ESG planning.

Hana Financial registered a net income of 1.34 trillion won ($971 million) in the first three months of this year. The 6.2 percent yearon-year growth was underpinned by its bank subsidiary Hana Bank which logged 843.2 billion won in net income in the same period.
