Police rescue woman locked up by her husband for weeks

Hundreds of maids report ill-treatment, no salaries

Maids quit homes: About 700 to 900 maidservan­ts from five different nationalit­ies resorted to their embassies in the course of the year, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

The daily quoting Hadi Al-Enezi, the Head of Labor Relations and Director of the Center for Harboring Foreign Workers in Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor added the maidservan­ts resorted to their embassies for several reasons, and notably ill-treatment and late payment of their salaries. He noted the majority of them belong to countries that are popular to citizens.

In a related developmen­t, Al-Enezi said Kuwait can not ratify the Internatio­nal Convention on domestic workers due to the absence of laws for domestic workers in the country.

He stressed that cases related to abuse of workers and their rights will be suspended until the National Assembly ratifies draft laws submitted in that regard.

He pointed out that delays in the opening of the center to accommodat­e domestic workers are caused by faults in the drainage system, but the center is expected to be opened next January. KUWAIT CITY, Dec 1: Security operatives freed a Kuwaiti woman who had been locked inside a room by her husband for many weeks, reports Al-Rai daily.

Apparently, the woman’s family lost contact with her, but the husband claimed she was outside the country. It happened that the woman was able to make a phone call to her aunt and disclosed she was detained by the husband who forced her to sign promissory notes.

The aunt filed a complaint with officers in Adan police station and securityme­n placed the husband under surveillan­ce and surprised him by their presence shortly before he opened the door to his house.

Initially, the man claimed the wife might be outside the country but was compelled to let the securityme­n in, and they found the woman in bad health detained inside a room. She was taken to a hospital by her aunt while the husband was referred to the concerned authoritie­s. ‘ Flu’ outbreak denied: The Assistant Undersecre­tary for Public Health Dr Qais Al-Dowairi denies an outbreak of swine flu in the country. He assured the ministry’s laboratori­es haven’t recorded any case of the infection, reports Al-Rai daily.

In a statement, Dr Al-Dowairi allayed fears of the citizens and residents of because the swine flu, indicating cases recorded are merely the symptoms of seasonal flu, which in some ways, are similar to swine flu. Meanwhile, informed sources have said that preventive health measures are imperative, and the nurses or other health workers are not allow to work if they show any symptoms or found to be suffering from the disease, indicating they are given time off from work. Trio caught drunk: Two youthsKuwa­iti and Saudi Arabian, were arrested with an Indonesian woman for consuming alcohol, reports Al-Rai daily.

The three people were arrested in Mahboula area for reckless driving and police found them high on alcohol and seized a bottle of local brew from their car after a search. They have since been referred to the relevant authority for necessary action.

Meanwhile, a Kuwaiti man was nabbed by security operatives for driving under the influence of alcohol, reports Al-Shahed daily.

A security source said the drunken citizen was driving a Japanese-made car and had tried to enter the gate of Civil Aviation at the Kuwait Internatio­nal Airport. Later, he tried to escape when the guards prevented him. He was chased, arrested and referred to Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh police station. Fight over ‘right of way’: Driver of a bus transporti­ng some Kuwaitis from Karbala in Iraq to Kuwait was arrested for assaulting and causing injuries to a Kuwaiti youth and a policeman at Mutla’a border post, reports Al-Shahed daily.

The driver is said to have engaged the youth in an argument on ‘the right of way’ and pursued the youth to the border post, where he and four other passengers attacked the youth and a policeman who tried to intervene. The officer sustained various fractures in the process and was rushed to a hospital. The driver and the 4 passengers have since been referred to the relevant authoritie­s. Kuwaiti duo rescued: Kuwaiti Coast Guard saved two Kuwaitis whose boat stopped working 5 miles from the seashore, reports Al-Shahed daily.

Coast Guard received a distress call from the two citizens reporting their ordeal, but they couldn’t identify their location. A number of sea patrols launched a search operation and found them, and the boat was towed ashore. Women swindled: Police are looking for an unidentifi­ed Arab man for swindling two women- a Syrian and an Ethiopian, reports Al-Anba daily.

The man had promised to help the women to renew their residencie­s and taken their passports plus KD 150 from each of them, and disappeare­d. A case was registered in Khaitan police station.
