UNITED NATIONS, Dec 2, (KUNA): The UN Security Council on Saturday welcomed the continued cooperation between the Kuwaiti and Iraqi governments and the latter’s continued commitment to fully implement its outstanding obligations under the relevant Chapter VII Council resolutions.
A press statement issued Saturday by the Council President, Morocco, called on both governments to continue to act in a spirit that builds further confidence and cooperation, which should contribute to the strengthening of the two countries’ good-neighbourly relations and enhancing regional stability.
The statement was proposed by the US following the presentation the UN Special Representative for Iraq Martin Kobler made to the Council last Thursday on the work of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) which he heads. The statement went into silence procedure until this morning. No Council member objected.
Kobler told the Council that he recently held talks in both Kuwait and Iraq where he was “encouraged by the strong commitment” expressed at the highest level in both countries to normalizing relations. He also appealed to Baghdad to fulfil its other outstanding obligations, in particular those related to the missing persons and property.
“The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the importance of Iraq achieving international standing equal to that which it held prior to the adoption of relevant resolutions, beginning with resolution 661 of 1990,” the Council press statement said, reminding Iraq of its “remaining obligations.” The Council also welcomed the joint Kuwaiti and Iraqi request, following the “positive outcome” of the second session of the Joint Iraq-Kuwait Ministerial Committee last April for the UN to reactivate the IraqKuwait Boundary Maintenance Project, as recommended by the UN Iraq-Kuwait Boundary Demarcation Commission and as welcomed by Council resolution 833 of 1993.
