‘Wasta’ cause of 10 pc rise in crime this year – report

MEW cables stolen: Police are looking for thieves who stole cables estimated at KD 180,000 from a Ministry of Electricit­y and Water project at Jaber Al-Ali area.

Contractor of the project told security operatives that unknown persons stole cables from the site. Criminal Evidences rushed to the scene, lifted fingerprin­ts and registered a case for investigat­ion to trail the suspects. Caught red-handed: Two Indian guards working at a project in Abdullah Port assaulted an Asian expatriate who was caught stealing cable from the site.

Apparently, one of the guards saw the Asian while he was making an effort to steal cable from the site late at night and alerted his partner. They managed to catch him after he tried in vain to escape.

Later, director of the project was told about the incident and he informed the operations Room. Officers were deployed to the scene without delay and the suspect was taken to the concerned authority.

Agencies add: 10 pc rise in crimes: Statistics issued by the Interior Ministry show the crime rate this year shot up by 10%. Statistics attributed mediation (wasta) to the rise of crimes and said it plays an essential part for those who violate the laws, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Statistics also showed one crime is committed every minute. The statistics said 15,000 crimes were recorded in 9 months.
