Meet on establishi­ng Arab Human Rights Tribunal kicks off

Kuwait’s Al-awadhi leads Committee of Expert Jurists at confab

MANAMA, Feb 25, (KUNA): A conference aimed at establishi­ng an Arab Human Rights Tribunal kicked off here on Monday.

The two-day conference aims at exploring ways to create an Arab Human Rights Tribunal under the umbrella of the Arab League.

The Conference is chaired by the Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Sheikh Khalid bin Ali bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, in the presence of the Arab League’s Secretary-General, Dr Nabil Al-Arabi, with participat­ion of a Committee of Expert Jurists, formed by the Arab League’s Secretary-General and led by Kuwaiti professor Badriyya Al-Awadhi.

Al-Arabi called for the need to develop the joint Arab action and boost capability of the Arab League to deal with dangerous crises arising from violations of human rights.

He said in his speech that such events necessitat­ed to listen carefully to the calls of the Arab peoples seeking change and reforms as well as fighting corruption.

He added that the Arab League has acknowledg­ed the significan­ce of the ongoing developmen­ts and the need to cope with them for the sake of creating a quantum leap for the peoples and make peace and securi- ty to prevail.

For his part, Sheikh Khalid said in his speech that the initiative for the creation of an Arab Human Rights Tribunal is an assertion of respecting human rights to be a basis for the mankind to realize his or her rights.

He praised efforts of the Arab League in the developmen­t of a regional Arab system to encourage respect of human rights.
