PIES holds Sportsfest and Family Fun Run
‘Sound mind in a healthy body’
KUWAIT CITY, Feb 27: Two sports events in a row — Sportsfest 2013 from January 29 to 31 and Family Fun Run 2013 on February 16 — were recently held at the Philippine International English School (PIES) in Fahaheel, both aimed at promoting physical fitness among its students, parents and teachers.
The three-day Sportsfest, dubbed as the Clash of the Piesans, was highlighted by colorful opening ceremonies on the first day with the parade of athletes amidst the cheers of each of the four color-coded houses (red, blue, yellow and green); a field demonstration by Preschool, Grades 1 to 3 pupils clad in their colorful costumes and gymnast equipment; and the competition of Grade 4 to Grade 10 students in various sports events — basketball, volleyball, badminton, chess, patintero and table tennis. At the end of the three-day Sportsfest, the overall winners were declared with — as the Overall Champion; — as 1st Runner-Up; — as 2nd Runner-Up; and — as 3rd RunnerUp.
Teamwork
In their opening remarks, VicePrincipals Marivic D.C. Tamondong and Rowena P. Bautista welcomed this activity as an appropriate venue to strengthen bonding through friendship in sports. Sports, they added further, “teaches us teamwork, the importance of fair play and that winning or losing can be done with honor — knowing that one did the very best of one’s ability.”
Meanwhile, the 5K Family Fun Run which was organized for the first time by the school in coordination with several sponsors and entities is another sports activity participated in by more than 600 runners mostly students from Grade 5 to Grade 10 and their parents, teachers, members of the school management as well as invited guests. Guided by the principle “a sound mind in a healthy body” and by its slogan “The Family that Runs Together, Stays Together”, the 5k Family Fun Run is aimed at giving family members an opportunity to have fun and at the same time establish stronger family ties.
Ceremonies
The race which started from Fahaheel Sea Club ended at Kuwait Magic where closing and awarding ceremonies were held. The occasion was graced by the presence of the school’s chairman, H.E. Sheikh Faisal AlHumoud Al-Malik Al-Sabah, who said he was extremely happy to see everyone enjoying the event and he congratulated the students, parents and guest runners for the wholehearted support they extended to the event. He later did the honor of distributing the plaques of appreciation to different sponsors of the event after which the School Principal Antonio A. Casupang distributed the medals and trophies to the winning runners.
In his closing remarks, he expressed his gratitude and appreciation to all participants for their whole-hearted support to the event primarily to two top school organizers, School Administration Manager Mohamad Yakoub and Sports Director Arnold L. Eugenio. Principal Casupang also added that due to an all-out support extended by all, perhaps a second round of 5k Family Fun Run may be held next year.
