Canada’s head and neck cancer specialists team visits KCCC
KUWAIT CITY, April 15: Multidisciplinary care is healthcare practice that emphasizes the collaboration of healthcare specialists across different disciplines to provide the best care to the patient. Enhancing this model of care is the focus of the Kuwait Cancer Control Center (KCCC) and University Health Network (UHN) Partnership. UHN’s team of highly specialized Head and Neck cancer specialists will be in Kuwait from April 7 to 19 to work at KCCC in the Al Sabah Medical District, Shuwaikh.
This visit counts as one of many where specialized UHN teams from the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre work alongside KCCC’s medical teams to enhance cancer care, provide clinical expertise to patients, and strengthen cancer service delivery through multidisciplinary care.This will be the third visit for the UHN’s Head and Neck Cancer team to Kuwait.
In addition to performing their clinical work, the team will evaluate the progress made to date based on their original recommendations. For example, last year Dr. Ralph Gilbert performed a very complex surgery where he reconstructed a tongue for a cancer patient using the patient’s own tissue from his arm. There will be another exhibition match between remaining players from India and Pakistan (maximum one player from each KC registered teams) and an exhibition match in which Kuwait’s Women cricketers will be seen in action. team that accompanied Dr. Gilbert worked with the KCCC ICU team to ensure proper management of the patient post procedure, and the dietician who came on the team identified specific diets required for head and neck cancer patients as their diet is often compromised due to the location of the cancer.

The 2013 head and neck cancer multidisciplinary team is made up of 15 experts, comprising of specialists from medical, radiation and surgical oncology, psychiatry, anesthesia, radiology, pathology, radiation physics, nursing,nutrition, and pharmacy with the focus of further implementing plans made in the previous year’s head and neck cancer site visit and continuing partnership initiatives. The matches will commence at 1:30 pm and the main event will be played under flood lights. care to bring their skills and knowledge to the bedside of the patients being treated at KCCC. Over the next two weeks, UHN and KCCC surgeons will work alongside one another to perform clinical consultations, treatment planning and surgery.
Opportunity
The KCCC-UHN partnership has also provided the opportunity for medical staff from the Kuwait Cancer Control Center to receive further training and specialization at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Physicians, surgeons, pathologists, and technicians have travelled to Toronto in the efforts of bringing sustainable specialization to Kuwaiti cancer care through the healthcare practitioners of Kuwait.
The site visit has been scheduled during this time period in April so that these world-class experts can participate in this year’s Head and Neck cancer Conference which took place April 3-6, 2013.Their knowledge and expertise were shared beyond the walls of KCCC to the wider Kuwait medical community.
