Marks & Spencer’s team holds beach clean-up drive
Part of Plan A initiative
KUWAIT CITY, April 15: The Marks & Spencer’s team took to cleaning the stretch of Marina Beach along the Gulf coast early Sunday morning, as part of the company’s Plan A initiative.
Twenty four employees filled many bags of waste and litter in two hour period. The initiative is titled ‘Plan A’ as it is believed that community involvement is now the only way to do business, and when it comes to the environment, ‘There is no Plan B’.
The beach clean up is the first successful event carried out by Mark’s & Spencer-Kuwait. “We are here to clean up the beach and gather litter. We will be separating the tin cans from other waste in order to sell them to a recycling unit and donate the proceeds to a cancer hospital”, informed Korayem Fahmy, Store Manager of M&S at 360 mall.
Managers of the commercial department, Daphne Casandra, Marilyn Bautista, George Thomas and Irene De Vera conveyed the high enthusiasm of the team to undertake the initiative for a worthy cause. “This will be the first of many such undertakings. We hope that in the future we are able to do more, get more people involved, especially children in schools,” Casandra remarked.
She added, “We have a lot of great ideas that are restricted to permits, but we are hoping to secure the necessary permissions and hoping for the best. In the future we would really like to do more for the environment and raise awareness; perhaps plant a tree or two.”
Marks & Spencer’s Global, launched Plan A in January 2007, setting out 100 commitments to achieve in 5 years which have now been extended to 180 commitments to achieve by 2015. The ultimate goal is to become the world’s most sustainable major retailer.
Officials inform that Through Plan A the company was working with customers and our suppliers to combat climate change, reduce waste, use sustainable raw materials, trade ethically, and help customers to lead healthier lifestyles.
The Plan A programme which is being implemented by M&S globally, involves participation from customers and focuses on the environment with climate change, waste management, use of sustainable natural resources at the forefront as well as ethical trading and helping customers improve their health and wellbeing.
