Maroons beat Stars as NYC Trophy kicks off

KUWAIT CITY, April 15: The prestigiou­s 22nd Edition NYC Trophy 11-aside football tournament organized by Navelim Youth Centre commenced on a grand note from Friday 12th April 2013 at MoH Grounds, Shuwaikh.

In the first match Goa Maroons defeated Rising Stars 4-1. In the tenth minute of the first half Durvesh connected a hard cross by Joe to score the first goal for Maroons.

All efforts from Rising Stars to equalize were negated by great saves by the Goa Maroons keeper Guilerme Gomes. But just before the breather, an excellent volley from Shiju Agustian gave no chance to the Maroons goalkeeper (1-1).

In the 2nd half Durvesh took the lead for Maroons 2-1. Gaby added his name to the score sheet with a powerful shot from outside the box (3-1). In the dying minutes of the match, a cool finish from Roger took the score beyond reach of Rising (4-1).

Skynet defeat DHL 3-0 In the 2nd match Skynet Raiders got the better of DHL by a score of 3-0. A precise floater from the left by Samson in the very 5th minute, was timely met by Manuel for the first goal. In the 2nd half, Manuel added another goal to his name. The 3rd and final goal was a class by Skynet’s hard working player Samson, who dribbled past two defenders and circled the goalkeeper before placing it into the empty net.

In the dying minutes of the game, DHL got a spot-kick which was however saved by Skynet goalkeeper Melvin.

Sparks beat UG Strikers 2-0 In the 3rd match of the day, Sparks defeated United Goans Centre 2-0. In the 20th minute of the game, a power packed shot from the top of the box by Sparks’ star Hossain gave no chance to United Goans goalkeeper. A defensive mistake gave a golden opportunit­y for Anwar to score the 2nd goal.

The tournament consisting of 18 teams is played under the auspices Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) and officiated by IFRA referees. All matches are played Friday at MoH grounds, Shuwaikh. Participat­ing Teams The participat­ing teams are AVC, C.R.C. Chinchinim, Curtorcare­s United, D.H.L, Don Bosco Oratory, FC Sparx, Goa Maroons, Indian Strikers, KGA, Malabar United, Kerala Challenger­s, Navelim Youth Centre, Real Betalbatim, Santos United, Skynet Raiders, United Friends Club, United Goans Centre, and Rising Stars.

The NYC Trophy, perhaps one of the most uniquely sculpt trophies in the world was instituted in the year 1993. The finals of this edition are slated to be held in June.

Organizers Navelim Youth CentreKuwa­it are into 25 glorious years of its existence in Kuwait.

Over the past 25 years, Navelim has built a solid foundation of history, strength and success which has become synonymous with Navelim villagers and Goans living in Kuwait. The club hopes everyone can join in the silver jubilee celebratio­ns and continue to foster strong relations with the club’s extended family — the Goan and the Indian community in general.

The club’s many achievemen­ts in the past are evidence of its commitment to the club’s slogan, ‘United We Stand’, as can be seen from examples elsewhere among Navelkars. Collective­ly, the club has organized numerous projects and raised tens of thousands for charities back home.

The village of Navelim has a rich history of football and is known to have produced many players who have progressed to fame on the football field and into profession­al careers.

The club which has won every trophy at stake among Indians in Kuwait has gone from strength to strength ever since its inception. The philosophy of the club has been to ensure that the players and members enjoy their week. Next Friday (19th April 2013) fixtures: Kerala Challenger­s v/s CRC Chinchnim @ 6.45 am
