Prisoner on the run nabbed after three-day police hunt
Saudi citizen’s bid to ‘smuggle’ out bedoun girl foiled
KUWAIT CITY, Nov 27: Ahmadi securitymen, after carrying out intensive search operations, arrested a Kuwaiti citizen in his early 30s yesterday following his escape from the Central Prison three days ago near a grocery shop in Fahaheel.
The citizen, who was wanted by law for several cases, was sentenced to seven-year imprisonment for firing gunshots at the residence of the Minister of Interior and for possessing drugs.
According to security sources, when one of the prisoners informed the prison management that an inmate escaped from jail number 3, the prison officers checked his cell to realize he was missing.
They then checked the records of the cameras installed in the prison to discover that the suspect had placed a piece of cloth over the lock of entrance of the prison earlier that day. Later when the prison guard fell asleep, the suspect escaped from his prison, passing the sleeping guard. He then made a phone call from the jail for 2.5 minutes after which he went out into the prison yard and ran across 400 square meters of open area.
A patrol vehicle was immediately dispatched to the yard to search for the convict but the officers were unable to find him. Later, when they checked the CCTV records again, the officers noticed that the suspect was lying on his back and hiding from the officers while they were searching the prison premises. Eventually, he managed to leave the jail through the main gate wearing casual attire where a vehicle was waiting for him. The camera failed to capture the details of the waiting vehicle.
The Assistant Undersecretary for Enforcement Affairs formed a team for carrying out the search operation. When the team received information that the suspect was spotted in Riqqa area driving a vehicle that he had stolen from a Kuwaiti citizen, securitymen tracked the vehicle and started chasing the suspect.
During the chase, the suspect’s vehicle collided with the patrol vehicle, due to which a First Sergeant Officer sustained a leg injury. The suspect jumped out of the vehicle and started shooting at the officers using a Kalashnikov weapon. He eventually escaped into a residential area in Fahaheel, which securitymen immediately surrounded and started searching.
Media Security Department of Ministry of Interior explained in a press statement that the suspect was arrested yesterday while he was attempting to burgle a commercial store. He was found with a stolen vehicle and in possession of drugs. He has been referred to the Central Prison.
Sources stressed that negligence of the Central Prison employees during their duty hours led to such an incident. They indicated that intensive investigations are ongoing to determine how he managed to escape despite the strict security systems implemented in the Central Prison, adding that the officers who were working during the shift when the incident occurred have been referred for investigations. After carrying out intensive investigations, the officers managed to find the second suspect and discovered he is a Bedoun who was involved in a number of cases.
When the officers demanded for the weapon with which he fired shots at them, he led them to another apartment, which belonged to a Saudi national. The officers found the weapon as well as some drugs after which they arrested the Saudi national.
