- By Jose Gabriel Special to the Arab Times

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 27: Team 1 found their bearings this week as they stunned all their opponents to move into the top spot of the highest category in the” Damayan Operation Haiyan Survivors Cup 2013” tournament, organized by the Filipino Badminton Club in Kuwait (FILBACK) at the Nasser Sports Club Friday.

Team 1— which includes Anthony Relova,Benji, Jeric and Ding Tomagan — were at their best in the second week of the tournament to lead the Higher A category while Team 3 — Dan Isidro, Rhoderick, Amor Abayon and Sheng Frugal — were at the top in Lower A.

Team 2 — Neil Montesa, Joni Gratil, Mark Arroyo and Henry — continued to top Higher B and Team 6 — Rey Vaquilar, Bong Labayo, Joel Lawagan and Liza Ibanga —were still the best in Lower B.

The numbers of the teams may be the same but all the teams in various categories are different because — depending on the entries — the teams in each category have been given numbers from 1 to 6 or 7.

In Higher D,Dina Hamdani was the leader after an excellent performance while Pacifico took over the top spot in Lower D.

The top four categories — Higher A, Lower A, Higher B and Lower B — are seeing a team competition. Each team is based on four players and all the pairs are formed from these players only. The other two categories —Higher D and Lower D— involve an individual competition which is based on a rotation of partners with every player joining hands all the other players in the category for one match.

This event—aimed at lending a helping hand to the victims of the HaiyanTyphoon in the Philippines — is being made possible through the efforts of FILBACK Director Leo Regner, FILBACK Tournament Director Renato Calanog, Alpha Phi Omega Kuwait Alumni Association (APO KAA-153) and all the office bearers who work hard throughout the year to not only provide quality tournaments but also promote friendship and sportsmanship among the members of these organizations. Special mention must also be made of Aleks Hernandez for compiling and collating the results of the tournament.

All the matches in tournament are being played over three sets but if any pair takes only the first two sets to win the game, the winner is awarded 50 points and the losers the actual number of points they compile in both the sets. But if the match goes to three sets, the winners get 42 points and the losers see the points of their best two sets being accumulated. In case of a default, the winners get 50 points and the losers 20 points.

In case any player is missing for his games, he can be replaced for that game with another player from the same or lower category. This player is called a Joker.
