Al-omair urged to look into alleged dumping of oil in sea
MP Tamimi slams EPA, other agencies
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 26: MP Abdullah Al-Tamimi has criticized the Environment Public Authority (EPA) and other environmental agencies due to the destruction of the environment caused by waste materials dumped into the sea.
He urged Minister of Oil and State Minister for National Assembly Affairs Ali Al-Omair to look into the alleged dumping of oil waste in Kuwait’s territorial waters. He pointed out the minister is politically responsible for the oil and environmental agencies; hence, the need for him to take the necessary action before the problem gets worse.
He cited a video clip uploaded on various social networking sites showing the death of a large quantity of fish, raising suspicion that toxic substances dumped into the sea caused the fish kill. He also mentioned the publication of a report about oil substances being dumped in Kuwaiti territorial waters, which was vehemently denied by Kuwait Oil Company.
He said the minister and the environmental agencies now have a chance to uncover the truth and deal with issues concerning marine environment. He asserted there is no reason for delaying investigations on these issues as the environment has been violated for many years. He warned the Parliament will be compelled to conduct its own investigation in case the concerned authorities fail to do so and those behind the destruction of the environment will be held responsible.
Meanwhile, acting Parliament Speaker Yaqoub Al-Sane disclosed the Secretariat General of the legislature will receive the new building in early October. This came after the parties involved - Ministry of Public Works and the company tasked to implement the project - settled their differences. Speaking to the press after inspecting the building recently, Al-Sane confirmed the Office of the Parliament will soon take the required steps to complete the remaining phases of the project within nine months after handing over the building to the Parliament. He clarified the hand over was delayed due to the legal
