Customs foils bid to smuggle 3m drug pills worth KD 6 mln
Security crackdown nets illegals, liquor peddlers, criminals
Panel dissolved: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior has issued a decision to dissolve the National Committee for the Prevention of Drugs, an independent body which was established in 2005 headed by the then Minister of Interior and referred the decision to the Council of Ministers for approval, reports Al-Shahed daily.
Informed sources said the decision has been taken in the face of the failure of the committee to play a vital role on one hand and to protect the public funds on the other.
Agencies KUWAIT CITY, Oct 19: Officers from the Air Cargo Unit in the General Customs Department , in coordination with the Drug Control General Department at the Interior Ministry, recently foiled the attempt of a Syrian to smuggle three million narcotic pills worth K D6 million into the country.
Acting on a tip-off, the officers thoroughly inspected a cargo containing a big oven from Lebanon and this led to the discovery of the large quantity of narcotic pills.
The suspect and the confiscated items were referred to the concerned security department for the necessary legal action. Security crackdown: Officers from Mubarak Al-Kabeer Security Directorate in a recent crackdown on vice apprehended a number of suspects wanted for various criminal offenses and people without civil ID cards, marginal workers, and street vendors.
The officers also dealt with 8 quarrels, and issued 221 traffic citations, impounded 4 vehicles, investigated 108 traffic accidents and mounted 106 security checkpoints.
In a related development, officers from Ahmadi security directorate seized 80 bottles of liquor from eight Asians in Fintas, Mahboula and Manqaf areas respectively, and detained a citizen in Aqeela area for possessing narcotic substance. Also two citizens were nabbed in Mahboula in possession of bags containing narcotics. One of the citizens was wanted in a previous case.
Meanwhile, officers held an Asian with a knife and drugs in his keep and issued 19 traffic citations, towed 4 vehicles to the ministry garages in Mina Abdullah and referred 19 people to detention for reckless driving.
In another development, security operatives arrested 15 people for various offenses and 11 others without civil ID cards. They detained three Asians who were found in disoriented state at Mahboula and two citizens in Jaber Al-Ali area.
Also, security officers from Jahra conducted a campaign leading to arrest of nine people without civil ID cards and 11 others with expired documents. They issued 30 traffic citations in Kabad area and referred all suspects to concerned authorities for necessary legal action.
