NHL fine Lucic $5K for obscene gesture

WASHINGTON, Oct 19, (RTRS): Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic has apologized for an obscene gesture he made toward fans as he entered the penalty box during Thursday’s game at the Montreal Canadiens.

Lucic was fined $5,000 by the NHL on Friday.

Lucic received a penalty late during the 6-4 loss. As he entered the penalty box, he made the gesture and then flexed his arms pretending to lift the Stanley Cup.

“Obviously not proud of what I did there,” Lucic said on Saturday. “Just want to apologize to our organizati­on for embarrassi­ng the Bruins organizati­on.

“Also want to apologize to our fans, and also apologize to the Montreal Canadiens organizati­on and to the Canadiens fans. I know they can get under your skin sometimes, but they are great fans. So apologies for my actions. I regret what I did.”

New York Islanders forward Mikhail Grabovski began feeling concussion symptoms Friday, a day after passing tests, according to Newsday.

The San Jose Sharks recalled forward Eriah Hayes from Worcester of the AHL after placing forward Mike Brown on injured reserve.

Hayes is tied for first in scoring with Worcester with two points (two assists) in two games. The Sharks picked up Hayes as a free agent in April 2013.

The St. Louis Blues recalled defenseman Petteri Lindbohm from the Chicago Wolves of the AHL.

Lindbohm, 21, has a goal and an assist to go along with a plus-3 rating in three games with the Wolves this season.

The Detroit Red Wings recalled goaltender Petr Mrazek from Grand Rapids of the AHL.

Mrazek, 22, is 1-1-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and .907 save percentage in two starts with Grand Rapids. Last season, he was second in the AHL with a 2.10 goals-against average and third in the league with a .924 save percentage. and sent Niklas Kronwall’s centering pass over Jonathan Bernier’s shoulder.

Jonas Gustavson made 30 saves for his sixth career shutout. Bernier stopped 31 shots, but sustained his third loss of the season.

Tomas Tatar almost ended the game 80 seconds into overtime but his shot past a distracted Bernier nicked the left post.

Senators 3, Blue Jackets 2 In Ottawa, Mike Hoffman made up for missing a penalty shot by scoring the tiebreakin­g goal midway through the third period to give Ottawa a win over Columbus.

David Legwand and Erik Karlsson also scored, and Robin Lehner stopped 38 shots to help Ottawa earn its fourth straight win after losing its opener.

Nick Foligno and David Savard scored for the Blue Jackets. Curtis McElhinney allowed two goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Sergei Bobrovsky, who gave up one goal on 18 shots.

Columbus scored two goals 41 seconds apart in the second period to tie the game.

Canadiens 3, Avalanche 2 In Montreal, P.K. Subban scored twice and Alex Galchenyuk had a goal and an assist in Montreal’s victory over Colorado.

Carey Price made 32 saves to help the Canadiens improve to 5-1.

Alex Tanguay and Matt Duchene scored for Colorado, and Calvin Pickard made 33 saves in his first NHL start. The Avalanche went 1-2-1 on their trip to drop to 1-4-1 overall.

The Avalanche turned to Pickard after Semyon Varlamov aggravated a groin injury and backup Reto Berra was hurt in Thursday night in a 5-3 loss to Ottawa.

Blackhawks 2, Predators 1, OT In Chicago, Jonathan Toews scored a short-handed breakaway goal at 3:26 of overtime to lift Chicago over Nashville.

With Patrick Sharp off for tripping, Toews stole the puck from Nashville’s Roman Josi just inside the Chicago blue line. He raced down left wing, cut to the slot and was stopped by Carter Hutton on his first shot, but Toews pushed the rebound under Hutton’s pads.

Johnny Oduya scored his first goal of the season in the first period for Chicago. Corey Crawford had 19 saves.

Shea Weber scored his third goal for Nashville, and Hutton stopped 35 shots. Hutton made his first start of the season in place of Pekka Rinne, who started the Predators’ first four games.

Flyers 6, Stars 5, OT In Dallas, Claude Giroux scored a power-play goal 2:49 into overtime to give Philadelph­ia a come-from-behind victory.

Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, Andrew MacDonald, Jakub Voracek and Michael Raffl scored in regulation for the Flyers. Giroux’s game-winner came 40 seconds after Dallas’ Trevor Daley was penalized for hooking. It was Philadelph­ia’s third power-play goal in the game.

Daley scored twice, Jason Spezza had a goal and three assists, Eric Cole and Jamie Benn also scored, and Tyler Seguin had four assists for the Stars. Kari Lehtonen made 30 saves but fell to 0-112 against the Flyers.

The Stars led 4-2 heading to the third period, before MacDonald and Voracek scored to tie it with 5:46 left in regulation. Spezza regained Dallas’ lead 40 seconds later, but Raffl tied it again with 3:53 remaining.

Blues 6, Coyotes 1 In Glendale, Arizona, Jaden Schwartz completed his first NHL hat trick with 3 seconds to play, goalie Jake Allen was strong in his first NHL start in two seasons, and St Louis dominated Arizona.

Jori Lehtera scored his first career goal and had two assists for the Blues.

David Backes and Alexander Steen each had a goal and an assist, and Vladimir Tarasenko assisted on three goals. Lauri Korpikoski ruined Allen’s shutout bid with 9:32 left.
