‘Intervention in Yemen stems from contractual commitments’

Action aims to maintain security and stability in GCC

JEDDAH, April 6, (KUNA): A Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry official confirmed here on Monday that Kuwait has initiated with brotherly GCC states providing immediate support by all means, including military intervention, to protect Yemen and its people and install security, stability and legitimacy as well as defending Saudi Arabia in the face of aggression.

Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Ministry Ambassador Jassem AlMubaraki said in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on sidelines of the Senior Officials Meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) that this position came out of the contractual obligations of the State of Kuwait within the framework of the GCC and the Arab League Council.

He explained that the Member States in the legitimate support alliance is based on Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, article 2 of the Charter of the Arab League, Articles 2 and 3 of the joint Arab defense agreement and Articles 2 and 3 of the joint defense agreement of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

He added that the intervention aims to maintain security and stability in the Gulf Cooperation Council as an integral responsibility that lies on all the GCC countries.

The events in Yemen have destabilized security and tampered with its stability due to the sinful coup carried out by the Houthi militias against legitimacy represented by President Abed Rabbu Mansour Hadi, he said, stressing that this coup has become a serious threat to the security of Yemen, the region and the international peace and security as well.

He stressed that the GCC countries worked from the outset to maintain the security and stability of Yemen through the Gulf initiative and its executive mechanisms, which has received international support to get Yemen out of its ordeal and to avert more bloodshed as well as preserve its destiny.

The Houthi forces and the allied militias have rejected legitimacy and threatened the security and stability of the countries in the region, particularly the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and began to implement threats through intensive build-up on the borders of the kingdom and performing military exercises with various medium-caliber and heavy weapons.

On the situation in Syria, the Ambassador stressed that the conflict in Syria will stop only through dialogue and through supporting the United Nations efforts and its envoy Staffan de Mistura, to come up with a political solution based on the Geneva 1 resolutions that would meet the aspirations of the Syrian people.

He stressed the need to continue efforts to meet the humanitarian needs of the Syrian people, recalling the 3rd donor conference that was hosted by Kuwait on March 31st.

Turning to the Palestinian issue, the Kuwaiti official emphasized that this cause remains at the heart of the Muslim world’s concerns, as Al-Aqsa Mosque still remains under the Zionist occupation.
