MALAWI, May 2, (KUNA): A team of the African Continent Committee, affiliated to the Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS), arrived here on Saturday from Kenya to deliver a second batch of humanitarian aid supplies.

Committee Chairman Jassim Al-Ainati told KUNA upon arrival that the team would examine condition of the people who have been afflicted with floods that swamped large swaths of the country in January, adding that aid supplies would be delivered to some 5,000 families. The relief operation is being possible due to generous donations by ordinary Kuwaiti citizens. It is in line with guidelines of His Highness the Amir and the UN-acclaimed “Humanitarian Leader,” Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

His Highness the Amir has given instruc- tions, as a matter of state policy, to the country’s various relief and philanthropic institutions to aid peoples stricken with catastrophes throughout the globe.

The Kuwaiti team was welcomed at Malawi’s airport by the head of Muslim Association of Malawi Sheikh Idriss Muhammad and members of the society.

Malawi, a very poor nation, witnessed ravaging floods in January that claimed 200 lives, wounded thousands of people and left more than 200,000 others homeless. The ferocious waters swept away agricultural crops and houses. Due to swamps, diseases have spread among the residents.

The African Continent Committee is a humanitarian relief body, which has constantly sought to alleviate suffering of the poor in the African continent for more than 30 years.
